Report on Faculty Council Meeting of 5-3-01 by KJ:
Truda Banta would like feedback on the IUPUI Mission Statement.
The resolution on an Educational Requirement for anyone working with Human Subjects passed. Essentially the only exempt category is student class work which will only be reported in class and not published ANYWHERE. Thus everyone, faculty, staff, and students will need to pass an Education Requirement to work with human subjects. A web based tool is available for this.
The ban on cigarette sales on campus was passed.
The Trustees also met on 5-3-01: Ten million has been budgeted for the academic portion of the new Student Center (25 million total is needed). The new Technology Building (which will also replace Mary Cable) was approved as were the destruction of Warthin apartments and the construction of new dorms on that site.
PD was concerned about the availability of affordable short term housing for visitors with the loss of Warthin apts. The campus Hotel is very expensive.
KW and CY presented the proposed SOS Budget for the coming year and DS joined the discussion towards the end. The 2001-2002 SOS budget is about 33M$ of which 15M$ goes to salaries and benefits and 14M$ to University Assessments. Operation of the Dean's Office cost about 275 K$. About 2.7 M$ is available for departmental budgets. Sources of income and expenses were outlined in some detail. Various ways to reduce expenses were discussed and the various costs of running the Dean's Office were discussed in detail. The Steering Committee felt strongly that the funds to support undergraduate research (UROP) should not be cut. The best way to handle parking expenses for emeritus faculty and the SOS Advisory Committee were discussed. Mary Ellen Alig will be replaced and a new staff person may be hired to work on the Capital Campaign. Dean Gordon Fricke will not be replaced and Brenda Bishop will take on some of his responsibilities.
DS would like to use the Campaign for IUPUI to raise money to endow SOS scholarships. This would take some pressure off the SOS budget. Brenda Bishop and KW have been working together, in collaboration with faculty, in pursuit of private foundation money.
The SOS annualized income from Grants and Contracts is up 10% for the current year. The SOS represents approximately ¼ of non-health grant income on campus.
KJ reminded us to return our review forms for the Dean.
The meeting was adjourned about 11:30 AM
