Brenda Bishop reported on the Capital Campaign. Our target is 3 million by 2004, of which 2 million has been raised. In fundraising, typically, ninety percent of the money comes from ten percent of the donors. Currently our big gifts come from Friends and Faculty of the SOS. As a group, our Alumni are still too young to have a major impact. The Committee inquired about the opportunity for faculty input on how gift funds are spent. Brenda pointed out that most of the money is restricted, e.g. the money for the Bittinger Chair for Math Education. We had hoped to raise 1 million for graduate student funding, but only 100 k$ has been raised so far.
Evaluation of Chairs and Administrators is scheduled for Spring 2002. We had some discussion of how this was done in previous years and how we would like to do it this year. There was a sense that the detailed questions of the previous cycle were 'overkill'. The process can easily take an inordinate amount of time. Thus the frequency of evaluations was discussed. Since Dean Stocum just had his university administrative review, in which faculty were asked to evaluate him, it may be possible to use that material for our review this spring. KJ will ask. KJ proposed that we do evaluations in early spring, summaries over spring break, and meetings with administrators after spring break.
MISC: KJ reported that Bob Martin has acknowledged our 'brick' letter requesting the SE corner of LD be done like the NE corner of SL. Math has created a set of Bylaws for smoother departmental operation. They are new and untested. We will be electing a new SOS Faculty Assembly President this spring. The low turnout at our SOS Fall Faculty Assembly was lamented. We would like to improve turnout.
SOS Steering Committee Meetings in the spring will be scheduled for 10:30 AM on Fridays after Faculty Council Meetings: January 11, February 8, March 8, April 5, May 3 (if needed).
