SOS Steering Committee Meeting 2-27-2004

Minutes

Members Present: Kim Nguyen (Dean’s Office), J. Kuczkowski (Dean’s Office), J. Luke (Mathematical Sciences), D. Rao (Physics), D. Crowell (Biology), D. Stocum (Dean’s Office), P. Fastenau (Psychology), A. Barth (Geology), R. Allen (Chair), K. Johnson (Secretary)

1. R. Allen and D. Rao relayed some inconsistencies in communications with members of the SOS Dean Search Committee. Steering Committee members believe strongly that candidates should present a brief address to the faculty at the start of the scheduled “open forum” session. Brenda Bishop is now delegated as the source of information regarding search committee activities (i.e., she will disseminate CVs via email and make sure that itineraries for candidates are available to all faculty). Steering Committee members believe that it is very important for faculty to have access to the application materials for all candidates who are finalists. Committee members also believe that it is best to restrict the number of recommended candidates to three (rather than expanding the size of the final “acceptable” pool beyond three names).

2. J. Luke disseminated copies of the proposed changes to the Bylaws. R. Allen suggested renaming the ARS (Academic Review Subcommittee) to the SAR (Subcommittee for Academic Review). The committee concurred (following much raucous laughter). Each subsection was reviewed in turn and suggestions for modifications were made by committee members. P. Fastenau and J. Luke will make the final changes and send the document out one more time to Steering Committee members, prior to sending it out to all voting faculty for input prior to a mail ballot on the amendments to the Bylaws.

3. Agenda for Spring Assembly: two sets of bylaws changes (committee composition, administrative reviews). D. Stocum will distribute information related to budgetary issues, diversity, and returns on investments. We also will try to solicit nominees for the SOS President and Secretary positions. Tentative date: Friday afternoon, March 26.

Respectfully submitted,
K. Johnson 2/27/04
